The City Initiatives “Kulluna Ahl” Initiative-The Food Bank Initiative

The Objective:

As the prices of food staff are soaring , and because many families are suffering from low and limited income, and in compliance with his Majesty King Abdullah II’s directives which were oriented towards supporting the price inflected families, Amman Greater Municipality GAM, emanating from its social responsibility, has recently launched Food Bank Initiative under the umbrella of “Kulluna Ahl”( we are all relatives) initiative. In as much as providing food resources has a positive impact on assisting children to have accessibility to basic food , this humane process itself does also provide for a healthy childhood which is very crucial for the offspring upbringing. This positive social effect is prompted through limiting school drop outs (leakage) and child labor.

The Initiative :

“Kulluna Ahl” campaign is meant to strengthen and solidify the social bonds, as the Jordanian families are well known for supporting one another. We all grew up with good neighbors racing for assisting and helping each other. The name of the campaign is but a reminder of these traits; it is great to remind our folks that we are still maintaining our social connectedness and solidarity ; and it is also great to remind our good people that we are all there to help the “poor” discreet families amidst the mounting international prices which affect us all, without losing sight of the humane aspect.

The Mechanism

 It is such a simple initiative that encourages people, when shopping at the supermarkets, to purchase some food staffs, each according to his financial needs, and donate the same into a box especially designated for this particular purpose. The food materials are to be collected ,sorted out, packed, and eventually delivered to the needy and discreet families, only within the boundaries of GAM. Donations in kind ( food staffs) could be made through companies, firms, and institutions.

Donated Materials

 The donated materials should not be easily spoiled, not in need for refrigeration, and easy to store, such as : sugar, rice, powder milk ,cooking oil, tea, spaghetti, endomy, pasta, flower, beans, grains( of all kinds), vegetable cooking butter, sesame-seed sweets, sesame oil sauce, canned food (of all kinds) and canned meat.

 How to Donate Private Sector: Banks, companies and factories

1- The initiatives is to be supported by the private sector, namely banks, companies and factories, through donations in kind; therefore , cash donations are not acceptable. Donors are to purchase the food materials and hence coordinate with GAM to arrange for delivering these donations;
2- Donors may allocate a specified amount and pay directly to the food supplier, following an agreement specifying kind, quantity and price, and in coordination the initiative coordinator at GAM.

The Role of Volunteers

The volunteers role is informative; it is played through the identification of the initiative and its objectives, and through the dissemination of pertinent brochures to the public at large and to malls, and supermarkets within the following regions ( regions are not mentioned) The young volunteers are not authorized to collect any donations in cash or in kind; their role is confined only to the afore entioned informative duty.

Networking with the Local Community and NGO’s and the Cooperation Agreements

The Initiative has signed cooperation agreements with National Alliance Against Hunger and Food Security chaired by HRH Princess Basma Bint Talal with the aim of consolidating efforts and exchanging expertise in this field. The International Food Banks Network was briefed on the Initiative achievements, and consequently training on world food banks was conducted in the USA. “Kulluna Ahl” Initiative is considered a member in the Jordanian Food Bank which was launched in March 2009. The Initiative joined activities with National Alliance Against Hunger and Food represented by Drive Against Hunger Rally which kicked off in Germany and ended up in Jordan, allocating proceeds to the National Alliance Against Hunger and Food Security to implement a number of charitable projects.
