The ancient town of Wadi Esseir
was thriving and well-populated.
Its name derives from the name
of one of two queens that once
ruled the area in ancient times
(BC): Queen Seir and her sister
Queen Sara. The area which has
since been known as Wadi Esseir
is noted for its farming and
local network of wide and
well-maintained roads, and other
major roads that link it to
neighboring regions, 80% of
which are paved.
The first municipal council for
Wadi Esseir was established in
1930. Since then, subsequent
councils continued to provide
services to the community up
until the end of 1986. That’s
when Wadi Esseir was formally
annexed to GAM and became one of
the twenty regions on 1/1/1987.
