King Talal Square is one of the major squares in Amman. It is a commercial,
social and residential precinct. The importance of the tunnels project stems from:
1. The fact that the Square is located at one of the major intersections within Amman.
2. Serves as link between south, north and west Amman.
3. It is the point where the traffic is most congested in the capital.
In designing the project, emphasis was placed on finding the best solution
to traffic congestion by creating two intersecting tunnels, which reduced
traffic delay time from 700 seconds to 18 seconds.
The Municipality was keen on presenting the project as a work of art with esthetic elements.
The project included benches, water fountains, tiled yards, and plants and trees, in addition to the old statue, which was kept and set up in a new design.
The project stands out when lit at night.

Jordan Street
|
|
|
One of the most vital streets in Amman, Jordan St. links the center of the capital with Jordan’s north, without the need to go through the congested streets in the capital, or the surrounding areas, such as Sweileh and Al Baqa’. The Street was designed as an alternative route (an additional one too) to University St As a freeway, Jordan St. has no intersections that would hinder the smooth flow of traffic.
The possibility of avoiding having intersections on Jordan St. was due to the fact that it was easy to acquire undeveloped lands and thus create tunnels, ramps and exits. Such is the case with the intersection at Istiqlal St, where a 4-lane tunnel was constructed under Istiqlal St in each direction, along with exit ramps.
