Amman has been divided into 20 Regions. A Region is sort of a small town that provides all needed services directly to citizens without going back to the Municipality’s headquarters – except such services as planning, zoning and disbursement of funds, for these are conducted in Municipality headquarters. |

Regions are: Basman, Marka, Al Nusr, Al Yarmouk, Ras Al ‘Ain, Badr, Zahran, Al ‘Abdali, Tariq, Al Qweismeh, Khraibet Essouq, Mqabalein, Al Jbeiha, Wadi Esseir, Sweileh, Tla’ Al ‘Ali, Shafa Badran, Badr Al Jadeeda, Abu Nseir

Currently, the land area of the City is approximately 700 km2 and its population is around 1,800,000.

The first municipal council established for Amman was in 1909. The City’s population then stood at 300 families, i.e. around 2000 people
|

In 1950, the name of Amman Municipality was changed to Municipality of the Capital
|
|
|
|
In 1987 it was given the title of Greater Amman Municipality
|
|
|
|
Amman has been greatly impacted by the Zionist invasion of Palestine which resulted in the arrival of more than a million persons following the years 1948 and 1967. Moreover, the City has also been impacted by internal migration from Badia and rural areas of people moving to the City for work and settlement.
