The Semitic name for
the city is Jarsho, and it was called Jerasa during the Hellenic
period. It was also mentioned in some of the Nabatean inscriptions.
Jarash is one of the most important cities of the Decapolis- the
league of Ten Cities, which was established by Pompey in 63 BC. The
city thrived under Umayyad rule.
Southern Theater: built in late 1st century AD.
Nymphaeum: a structure that includes water fountains built for
Nymphs in late 2nd century AD
Southern Gate: built in the 2nd century AD and was destroyed in 268
during the Tadmur Wars.
Colonnade: this is the main road in the Roman city of Jarash and it
stretches 800m.
Northern Amphitheater: among the most impressive buildings of the
northern part of the city. Work on the Amphitheater was completed in
164-165 AD.
