A
city carved in the rocks by the Nabatean Arabs more than 2000 years
ago. It is a testament to the human miracle that produced a city
from within the wombs of mountains. To its visitors, and those who
read about it, it is known as the Red Rose City, in reference to the
color of rocks that make up its unique structure. The City most a
kin to a huge citadel was the capital of the Nabatean state.

Petra
is located some 262 km to the south of Amman, and it is one of the
most important tourist attractions in Jordan. A visitor to the heart
of Petra will pass through the Siq: the incredible passageway of
1000m through the rocky mountains. When one reaches the end of the
Siq, turns a little to the side, then, suddenly, one can but stand
in awe as the most magnificent of antiquities is revealed in full
splendor; one of the wonders of the world; this creation which is
carved into stone-deaf rocks on the side of a mountain 140m in
height and 90m in width as its rose-colored rocks glitter under
sunlight.
In
the center of the City, a visitor will be able to see literally
hundreds of man-made constructs: lofty temples; royal tombs; a huge
amphitheater that can hold 7,000 spectators; houses, big and small;
festival halls; and water channels, tanks and baths; in addition to
decorated stairways, markets, and arched doorways.
The Deir (temple) is
considered the largest building in Petra; standing 45 meters high
and its gate at 8 meters. At the top of the Deir, which most likely
was built in the 3rd century AD, one can look beyond and be able to
see the Palestinian lands and the entire Sinai.
